“Asking for A Raise” Speech Assignment Sheet
Objective:
· The objective of this speech is to promote self-advocacy and workforce/workplace etiquette and preparedness.
Instructions:
· For this assignment, you will present a
3-4-minute speech asking for a raise.
· Pick either – 1) your current job or 2) imagine you are in your future dream job.
· No matter what job you pick, your purpose is to advocate for yourself in the workplace and in the position in which you are in and/or the raise/promotion you are trying to achieve.
STRUCTURE OF YOUR SPEECH
INTRODUCTION:
· Include a general introduction of yourself – you can use the guidelines from the textbook, Blackboard templates/examples, or previous speech introductions!
BODY:

MAIN POINT #1:
a. The position, current rate, and the employee’s (your) asking salary
TRANSITION

MAIN POINT #2:
a. Achievements or assets that you bring/have brought to the company
i. Basically – why does the employee (you) feel you deserve a salary increase?

a. Market Analysis of the position
i. You will need to do research on your job market analysis!
CONCLUSION:
· Include a general conclusion – you can use the guidelines from the textbook, Blackboard templates/examples, or from previous speech conclusions!
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
· Each of the Main Components above will be ONE MAIN POINT. Therefore, you will have a
total of THREE MAIN POINTS.
· I would
recommend including at least a few references/sources to back up your argument (for example, data about the market value of the job, or data about how a raise is reasonable due to your assets and recent achievements, etc.).
· This speech is persuasive in nature, but it includes a lot of detailed information about you, the job, and why you are asking for a raise.
