The independent study aims to dig deeper into the topic of “Architectural Surrealism” by carefully analyzing Giorgio Di Chirico’s work in order to then compare how the underlying themes of Surrealism affected architecture. The ideas of solitude, in addition to the transition from a classical period to a more technological and modern world will be analyzed and discussed with an emphasis on how these elements relate to architecture. From this study, a final 1800 word research paper will be written, focusing on the investigation of Di Chirico’s paintings and the architectural movements of the time.
The reading materials for the study will consist of, but not limited to, “Buildings Across Time” (Chapters 14,15 and 16) and “From Sphere to Labyrinth” by Manfredo Tafuri.
